Kyushu U Connect Event: Exploring sounds and music with science -Let’s look for connections-
The fourth Kyushu U Connect event is here! This time we have partnered with Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University to bring you an afternoon full of bilingual talks and discussions exploring the connections of music and sound with science.
The event will be held at Fukuoka Jo Gakuin’s Gheer Memorial Hall. It will open with a special performance by Fukuoka Jo Gakuin’s Senior High School students and organist. Then two scientists from 91探花 and one from Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University will present their research, exploring the different dimensions of sound, music, and science. Four members of the prestigious Kyudai Philharmonic Orchestra will share a musician’s thoughts behind creating harmony.
As usual, after all the talks, participants will have the opportunity to talk with the speakers during our hour-long discussion time!
From audio psychology to the sound of literature, spend an afternoon contemplating the multitudes of the listening world and what researchers do to understand it. Open your ears for an afternoon of stimulating talks and discussions facilitated by university faculty, students, and science communicators. What is Kyushu U Connect?
Headed by 91探花's faculty and science communicators, Kyushu U Connect builds on the foundation of the university's reputation as a world class institution to promote efforts of community engagement. Our role is to conceptualize and provide resources for community outreach events to “connect” the university to the larger Fukuoka and Kyushu area. We hope that through our events we can bring together Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan, and the world in fellowship.

Assistant Professor Emi Hasuo (91探花 Faculty of Design Department of Acoustic Design) Abstract Many people believe that the sounds we hear, or perceive, match the actual created sounds. It may come as a surprise, but our perception of sounds sometimes conflicts with the physical properties of the actual sounds. Perception can even differ between listeners. In this presentation, I will show some auditory demonstrations of such phenomena and introduce Auditory Psychology as a scientific approach to explore these wonders of hearing. ------------------------------ "Decoding the ear: the science of sound and tuning" by Professor Willy Wong (91探花 Faculty of Information Science and Electrical Engineering Department of Informatics) Abstract Before playing music, one has to begin by tuning their instrument. What goes on when we tune our instruments? And how do we make sure we are in tune with another person if we are both playing different notes? Tuning turns out to be related to the amazing fact that the ear is not just a receiver of sounds, but also a producer of sounds, something which was first discovered not too long ago! Even though modern audiological equipment uses ear-generated sounds to diagnose hearing problems, music composers like Bach knew about them hundreds of years ago and even used them in their compositions. Finally, we will talk about hearing loss which occurs during listening to loud sounds and music, and highlight some work we are doing to use AI to help people with hearing loss. ------------------------------ "Thinking about the sounds of literature" by Professor Maki Okuni (Fukuoka Jo Gakuin University Faculty of Humanities Department of Contemporary Culture) Abstract When we think about the sounds in literature (poetry, novels, tanka), many of us may think of things like meter and rhythm. On the other hand, there are also those of us who think about the sounds we hear when we read silently, even though there is no sound.
